Ethical Leadership

In the previous section, we explored various barriers that often hinder women’s career advancement and their ability to obtain the same working conditions as men. These include persistent biases and stereotypes, pay gaps, limited networking and mentorship opportunities, primary caregiving responsibilities for children and other dependents, and the so-called glass ceiling.

How can good leaders contribute to equal opportunities for all?

An ethical approach to leadership has the potential to be a key driver in removing barriers to equal access. Good leaders can contribute in many ways:

Supporting work-life balance and flexible working conditions

There are many ways to adapt working conditions flexibly so that caregiving women can also participate in the workforce. The simplest solutions include flexible work arrangements or remote work options. A World Economic Forum (WEF 2023) study found that workplace flexibility helps retain women in organisations after maternity leave in 94% of cases. A good example is Sweden, which introduced equal parental leave for both parents, helping to reduce gender inequalities in the labor market.

Eliminating bias in decision-making

Another important principle that should be actively implemented is reviewing past decisions and preventing unconscious bias in decision-making. Practical tools include employee training on bias awareness and the use of inclusive language in the workplace. According to studies by Catalyst (www.catalyst.org), teams that undergo such training experience up to a 60% improvement in workplace inclusivity.

👉 What other strategies can support gender equality and inclusive environments through ethical leadership? Let’s explore further.

Establishing and enforcing clear guidelines for transparent promotions

Organisations that apply ethical leadership also implement clear rules and transparent criteria for promotions and salary increases. Such companies often gain higher levels of employee trust, leading to greater job satisfaction.

Creating mentorship programmes

Another way to support women in achieving equal conditions is to connect them with experienced leaders and create opportunities for knowledge sharing and career guidance. This approach is sometimes referred to as sponsorship. According to a Harvard Business Review study on sponsorship (2021), women with sponsors are 22% more likely to reach leadership positions.

Leading by example in inclusive leadership and preventing discrimination

In organisations where ethical leadership is promoted, discrimination and unequal treatment are not tolerated. A safe space is created where employees can express their opinions through open dialogue. Good leaders can actively lead by example, ensuring that diverse perspectives are valued and all voices are heard.

👉 Now we have explored how ethical leadership can practically contribute to supporting equal opportunities in organisations. Perhaps you are now reflecting on how your organisation approaches ethical leadership, bias, flexibility, and equal opportunity access. Or how you would like these aspects to be handled in an organisation you aspire to work for.

We hope this module helps you make better decisions in alignment with ethical principles, navigate conflicts and dilemmas more effectively, and actively support or openly discuss measures that create equal opportunities for everyone—regardless of gender or other differences.
