Personal Development

What do I want to be known for?

ย

A personal vision statement is like a compass โ€” it doesnโ€™t tell you exactly how to get where youโ€™re going, but it helps you stay pointed in the right direction. While goals may shift over time, your vision gives you a sense of meaning, direction, and coherence. Itโ€™s your personal โ€œwhy.โ€

ย

Unlike a career goal or a job title, your vision is about who you want to become, what kind of impact you want to have, and what kind of life you want to live. Itโ€™s the big-picture view of your future โ€” not as a fantasy, but as a grounded aspiration.

Your vision should reflect your values, your gifts, and the kind of world you want to help create.

ย

Some guiding prompts:

  • What do I want to be known for?
  • What issues or causes do I care about deeply?
  • When do I feel most aligned with my values?
  • What kind of legacy do I want to leave โ€” at home, in my work, or in my community?

Steps to shape your vision statement:

Here are some steps to help you shape your personal vision statement:

โœ… Reflect on your core values โ€“ What matters most to you? List your top 3โ€“5 values.
โœ… Imagine your future self โ€“ Think 5โ€“10 years ahead. What does your ideal day look like? What are you doing, contributing, leading, learning?
โœ… Look at the themes โ€“ What keeps showing up in your thoughts, dreams, and goals?
โœ… Write it down โ€“ A personal vision statement is usually 3โ€“5 sentences long. Itโ€™s not about perfection โ€” itโ€™s about clarity and honesty.

ย

Example:

โ€œI want to be a compassionate and courageous leader who uplifts others through education and creativity. I aim to inspire women to believe in their own voice, grow communities rooted in equity, and lead with empathy and purpose.โ€

ย

Your vision statement isnโ€™t final โ€” it can evolve as you do. But once written, it becomes a tool you can return to whenever you feel stuck, uncertain, or overwhelmed.

ย

๐Ÿ‘‰ Now that youโ€™ve clarified where you want to go, letโ€™s explore how to stay open, flexible, and continuously growing through lifelong learning.
